SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Members of the Syracuse police crime scene unit and a large team of detectives have been on the city's southside since about 5 p.m. Sunday evening. Police are looking for even the smallest piece of information that can help lead them to arrest in this tragic case.
The shooting happened around 4:30 Sunday afternoon on the 300 block of Coolidge Avenue. Sergeant Tom Connellan says the toddler, Rashad Walker Jr. was in a car seat in a parked minivan when he was hit by at least one bullet from a number of shots. The toddler was hit, and was taken to Upstate University hospital where he later died.
Police say an eyewitness in a case like this can be a huge help. That's why they're looking for cooperation from anyone who may have been in the area.
"We're asking people, give the police the information. Call us with the information. We don't need any more, any type of retaliation. People are going to be very upset. It's going to be one of those crimes that is going to stir a lot of passion in people. Come to the police with that information and we will do our job. And we will capture who is responsible for this," Sgt. Connellan said.
He says there were a number of shootings reported to police throughout the day Sunday, but there's no word on whether or not this incident may have been related to the others.
If you have information that could help police with their investigation you're asked to call them at (315) 442-5222.
