ITHACA, N.Y. -- Leaders in Ithaca announced plans for the Martin Luther King Freedom Walkway, a path that will connect historic sites in the city.

The committee unveiled the design for a sculpture that will serve as a centerpiece for the walkway, as well as the new street sign logo.

Stops along the route will include the birthplace of Alex Haley, author of "roots" and the autobiography of Malcolm X as well as sites of civil rights rallies, and milestones in African-American history.

The committee has invited the public to be a part of the memorial.

"You can contribute. You can make this history come alive again and contribute. Whether it's a penny, a dollar or $10,000 that you might have. Just buy a part of it. Be a part of it," said organizer Leslyn McBean-Clairborne.

The committee hopes to have the walkway started within the next year.
