ITHACA, N.Y. -- It's no gingerbread house, but it is being built like one.
Workers put the roof on a new "green" house in Ithaca Monday. It took the help of a crane to put the roof on the new house at 711 Hancock Street.
The energy efficient roof and walls are made of prefabricated Super Insulated Panels, essentially, a core of foam plastic between two sheaths of wood.
The house is part of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's High Performance Residential Challenge, but the final look won't be at all hi-tech.
"That's one of the things we did with the design. We're trying to make it fit in the neighborhood," said project manager Tom Myers. "It is modern in its systems and the way it's built. But we want to keep a more traditional neighborhood look so it will fit in."
The house is an Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services Project. It will be sold as an affordable home to a first-time buyer next year.
