One week to Flower City Half Marathon

One week to Flower City Half Marathon

Monday, April 23, 2012
I took the past three days off because I was at my conference in Atlanta. I feel like such a bum. I should have at least tried to put 15 minutes in. Oh well. Nothing I can do now.

Today, I'm at Lisa Hill's tri training group, and man is it tough. It's snowing heavy, wet snow, and it's really cold. We still bike a relatively flat 10 mile loop. But I am freezing and it's hard to see because of the snow. I feel really out of shape on the bike. My heart rate is 155-165 the entire time, so I know I'm working. I'm also out of breath, but I feel so slow.

After the bike, we put in a 30 minute run with some functional hill training. The workouts are tough but I know without the group, I wouldn't be doing any of this yet. So I feel good knowing that I'm putting in the time and effort.

I just put in a 30 minute run today. I don't have the time to run any longer before I teach swimming. And I'm pretty exhausted. After teaching, though, I do put in a swim workout. I do a 500 warmup (100 swim, 100 kick, 100 pull, 200 drill) and then I do 3x 600 with 20 seconds rest. It's not too challenging of a workout, but my body is feeling it. I forget how much swimming works your entire body! My total workout, including warm up and cool down, is 92 lengths! Wow! That feels good.

I run 35 minutes before teaching swimming today. I run with three other people today, and I feel really pumped and motivated. Much better than yesterday. I actually seem to be running pretty fast. I'm feeling much better about this half marathon on Sunday.

After I teach swimming, I put in my own swim workout. I start with a 500 warmup (100 swim, 100 kick, 100 pull, 200 drill). That's my usual warmup because I like to incorporate kick, pull and drill into every workout, so I don't lose my form. The workout today is 5x 200s, which is much less than yesterday. The first one is as fast as I can go for the entire distance. The second is 150 fast, 50 easy. The third is 100 fast, 100 easy. The fourth is 50 fast, 150 easy. And the last is fast again. Those were each with a 30 second rest. I feel pretty tired after that workout. It's pretty tough incorporating the sprints back into swimming, especially when my body still isn't really back into the swim groove.

At my run group today. They're doing a 15 minute tempo run, but I just take it easy because of the race this weekend. Everyone is so encouraging and excited for me. It really means a lot. I love their support.

I took yesterday off, and it was awesome. I just relaxed all morning. It felt great! Today is also really relaxing. I only put in a 16 minute run, just to keep the legs fresh. Most of the day is spent laying around the house, doing nothing and enjoying every minute of it. I'm still feeling pretty confident about the half marathon tomorrow. I don't feel too nervous or stressed.

Jim and I drive down to Rochester and get dinner with his parents. Then at 9 p.m. it's bedtime. The only problem....prom is going on in our hotel. So the noise of that, combined with the kids running up and down the hall at all hours and the not so comfortable bed...means a not good evening for sleep. But during those few hours of sleep I got, I dreamed that there were only 10 people doing the half marathon and then I ended up getting lost. And we had to run through restaurants and people's houses. So when I woke up from that dream, I was feeling a lot more nervous. And now it's time for the big race!
