2 weeks to Flower City Half Marathon
Sunday, April 15, 2012My family is up today, and my fiance Jim and I look at our final options for purchasing a home. We procrastinate running all day. But finally, a 7:30 p.m., we decide to run. It was actually a great run. We pushed ourselves, and ran up hills at a fast pace. After, we did a little bit of strength training. It felt awesome. I really feel like I'm doing a lot better with my run.

I started a new triathlon training group today. Some generous friend signed me up and supported the financial aspect of training. The group is with Lisa Hill, who is a certified triathlon coach with the YMCA. We do the functional training course, which is around Green Lakes. It's intense. We run up hills and through the trails, all while doing pushups and dips and leg lifts on the natural terrain. It was pretty tiring. But it feels a lot better doing it this year than last year. I'm pretty wiped out after it all.

Tuesday, April 17, 2012I'm sore from Lisa's functional training yesterday.
Since, I'm traveling this week, I make Tuesday my long run. Luckily, a few people meet up with me to run. I feel really sluggish. I'm running at a pretty slow pace. I can't even make it two hours. I run an hour and 45 minutes instead. But I am dead tired.
A couple hours later, I have a personal training seminar for kickboxing. It felt good. We worked on a lot of technique. By the end, I was tired and sore.
Wednesday, April 18, 2012I am working 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. today because I am leaving for the AHCJ Health Journalism conference in Atlanta. I'm so excited! But my schedule change means I have to get up early to run. I am so tired that Jim and I only run 15 minutes. And even that was a struggle. But I can't wait for the health conference. Tomorrow (even earlier than today) I will be running with 1978 Olympian Jeff Galloway! I'm so excited.

Running with Jeff Galloway!!! Well, it was more running with a group, then a seminar with Galloway. He broke his hip, so he wasn't able to run with us. But his seminar was awesome. We asked him about training and nutrition and he was a wealth of knowledge. It was a blast. Galloway is responsible for the Galloway method of run/walk/run. I talked to him about my half marathon coming up, and he suggested walking portions to keep my legs fresh. It almost feels like cheating if I walk, but I think what he says makes sense. I won't walk as much as he suggests, but I will walk the aid stations. That way, not only do I not have to carry as much water with me, I can give my legs a much needed rest. He also reminded people not to over-hydrate during races, which will wash the sodium out of your body and make you sick. Good point. He says you only need 2-4 oz of water every two miles or so. Something to keep in mind. Great day. Awesome seminar!
