13 Weeks to Iron Girl: Getting Going
Sunday, May 8, 2011
I start the day with our company softball team. The season has finally started now that the fields have dried out. We are pretty bad and got mercied. But we had fun. Today is supposed to be my "long run" day, which is an endurance run. According to my running group, I'm supposed to do 30 minutes. But after 26 minutes of straight jogging (still at a pace that I could probably walk faster than), I can't do any more. So I walk for 10 minutes. I'm disappointed I couldn't do the full time. But I tried.

I haven't been in the pool in a while, so I figure I should do a swim workout. I warm up with 100 yards or four laps. Then I swim 12 laps regular, 12 laps pulling, 6 laps kicking and the last six swimming regularly. I do another 100 for cool down. It takes me about half an hour to do all this. 36 lengths is half a mile, which is less than the 600 meters required for Iron Girl. I feel pretty confident in the swim.
After swimming at the gym, I decide to go outside for my daily 15 minute jog. It's a beautiful day, and it feels so nice out. I do my jog and then walk for about 10 minutes. I feel great doing all this exercise!

Today is a busy workout day. According to our schedules, we're supposed to spend 45 minutes on the bike. I head out from Manlius to Oran, but it is a killer ride. I feel pretty lame because the hills aren't even that big. But I have to put my bike in the easiest gear just to get up the slight inclines. I don't even ride all the way to Oran (which is really only 2.5 miles from where I started). But I do ride around some big parking lots which are a lot flatter. It's too tough going up these hills. By the time I finish my 45 minutes, I'm completely wiped out and totally exhausted.
But I know I need to do my daily run. I jog for seven minutes, but can't continue on. I walk for the last eight minutes. I am so dead. I just collapse in a chair on my porch.
But I know I haven't completed a 15 minute jog, so later in the day, I try again. And I do manage to complete 15 minutes of a slight jog. I'm dead tired.

I'm taking today off of my Fleet Feet training. Monday was supposed to be our day off, but I wanted to get in pool time then. So today is a much needed day of rest. I still do my 15 minute jog because I know I'm probably going to take Saturday off of doing that. It is a definite struggle to just do 15 minutes of jogging. The rest of the day, I just lay on the porch and read. I really needed a day to recover.

It's back to Green Lakes for the running group today! I really needed the group to stay motivated this morning. I was completely ready to take the day off, but the group gives me a lot of support and motivation. This also fits into my Fleet Feet schedule perfectly. I'm supposed to do 33 minutes of continuous running for Fleet Feet. Our workout for the running group today isn't too bad. We do a ten minute warmup jog, then long distance strength training, which means we run for minutes as fast as we can sustain. Then we have a minute rest, and then we run seven minutes as fast as we can sustain. I manage to do the entire workout jogging. This is the first time I haven't had to walk a portion of the workout! I'm so excited. And I'm not last! I'm still in the back of the pack, but improving. Plus, I don't feel completely drained and out of breath by the end of the workout. We're supposed to doa light jog for cool down, but I have to mix it up with some walking. My legs are burning, but I feel great and totally motivated!

Today is supposed to be a swim workout, but I don't feel like going to the gym. So I decide to ride my bike. I ride out to Oran and back again. My phone's ap isn't working, so I can't track the exact distance and time for my ride. But it's something like half an hour. I map my route once I get home, and I did about five and a half miles. It is still such a killer ride. I feel much more in shape, but some of the hills are still pretty tough.
Once I finish the bike, I get to my daily run. I jog for 15 minutes, and boy does that 15 minutes feel really long! I am exhausted by the end of it. It's going to be a long day!

It's so hard to wake up this morning! I'm so tired. We do a lot more actual riding at the bike practice this morning. We do some drills and pace lines. We ride a lot more, and I'm wiped out by the end of practice. Plus, it rained all morning, so we were riding through puddles. By the end, I was wet and muddy. But it felt good to get out riding. Hopefully by the next practice, I should have clipless pedals. My dad is letting me borrow his pedals, and I have a bid in on a pair of used shoes. People keep wiping out with the clipless pedals, so I'm a bit intimidated. But it should help improve my biking a lot, hopefully
