Total handle was up again Sunday as bettors across the country and around the world show their enthusiasm about the Saratoga racing product.
The all-sources handle was up 16 percent Sunday to $16,508,875. On track, the handle was up four percent to $3,021,079.
Saratoga's on-track attendance was down 366 people from the same day last year, a drop of two percent, to 18,425.
Also ...

  • The two-day Pick Six carryover of $280,309 helped drive the handle forward as another $1 million was bet into the pool. A total of 31 winning tickets had the correct winners and were worth $28,666. Six of the winners were at the track.

  • Ramon Dominguez' six winners Sunday pushed him out to a 9-3 lead over five other jockeys. That group includes Jose Lezcano who won twice on Sunday.

  • Gemologist turned in a bullet five-furlong work of :58.40 - the fastest of 43 at the distance - on Sunday morning for trainer Todd Pletcher, who breezed 15 horses.
It was the second straight bullet work for Gemologist, who has not raced since absorbing his first career loss in the Kentucky Derby on May 5. The colt was found to have a foot bruise a few days after the Derby.
Pletcher said that Gemologist may run Saturday in the Jim Dandy at Saratoga or in the Haskell Invitational on Sunday at Monmouth Park.
“He worked super. It was a very impressive work,” Pletcher said. “He finished up great, galloped out well, and recovered quickly afterward. I think his conditioning is very, very good.
“I thought he breezed as well this morning as he’s ever breezed. He’s always been a good work horse, but he was exceptionally good this morning.”

  • 2011 Belmont Stakes winner Ruler on Ice will return to the races off a five-month freshening Wednesday in an optional claiming race at 1 1/8 miles.
