From the moment you check into the HOSHINOYA Karuizawa hot springs resort, you might sense that enlightenment has a permanent address.

One of three HOSHINOYA’s in Japan, these “neo-ryo’s” take the traditional Japanese ryokan to another level. Rates too are elevated between $650 to $850 a night.

Located an hour from Tokyo by bullet train, HOSHINOYA Karuizawa at the foot of Mt. Asama, is a retreat for nature lovers.

Adding to its contemplative vibe, are natural onsen hot springs and spa treatments that include a one of a kind sake massage.

As a media guest of HOSHINOYA, I also visited Karuizawa’s urban counterpart which immediately separates itself by a 15-minute boat ride from Kyoto City. More intimate than its rural sister, this 25 room inn has many of the same features: No TVs, heated floors & toilets, and authentic dining. The inn's restaurant specializes in homemade soba noodles.

The Kyoto City resort puts more of an emphasis on a la carte cultural experiences with incense ceremonies, a rickshaw tour and the chance to walk in a kimono.

Each of the properties supplies its guests with comfy clothing for both sleeping and day wear.
