ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira is getting a makeover. The Friends of Woodlawn unveiled a new sign for the cemetery Tuesday.
The $10,000 sign is made of stone and marble. It was paid for through a Community Foundation grant and Friends of Woodlawn.
Members of the group say it’s important to keep the cemetery, which is more than 150 years old, in good condition.
"It's a wonderful park-like forest in an urban setting and we need to protect that. And we also have an obligation to all those who have gone before and have contributed," said Jack Humphries, Friends of Woodlawn President.
This is the first in a number of revamping projects for the cemetery. The next project is to re-do the fencing along Davis Street.
