BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- There was a great turnout Saturday for a very special race in Binghamton.
Nearly 700 people showed up at Recreation Park to run in the 6th Annual John McKenna Memorial 5K run. McKenna was killed in action on August 16th, 2006 during his third tour serving as a United States Marine in Iraq. Proceeds from the race will go to the Albany Airport Military Courtesy Room and Binghamton Crew.
His family and friends said they were surprised by the large turnout.
Matthew Haas, John's friend said, “It's fantastic, I think he would be greatly honored by this and he would be one of those people saying, 'next year's going to be bigger.'"
McKenna attended Binghamton University and was part of the Crew team. And he graduated from the New York State Police Academy in 2005.
