Fire crews were originally called to the scene for report of a rubbish fire outside the duplex home. As firefighters checked the home, they noticed flames and smoke coming from the first floor.
Firefighters rescued Bobbie Kugler, 30, and her two-year-old son Tyron Jackson. Kugler is the mother of the four children who were killed.
Rochester Fire Chief John Caufield says the fire was so intense it prevented firefighters from getting to the second floor of the home to rescue four kids trapped inside.
Firefighters say James Austin, 25, a family friend, and Waltquaries Evans, 15, and Giovanni Delorm, 13, who were both sleeping over at the time of the fire, all escaped by jumping out of a second floor window. They're all in the hospital recovering. Strong Hospital says Delorm is in guarded condition.
In a statement he said, “Fires are extraordinarily complex and this is no exception. The Fire Investigation Unit, made up of investigators from the Rochester Fire Department, Rochester Police Department and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, is working diligently to find answers. Until they do, the best thing we can all do is keep these families in our thoughts and prayers.”
