ALBANY, N.Y. -- It's not a done deal yet, but Governor Paterson said he will repeal his license plate mandate -- but only if lawmakers come up with other ways to trim the 2010-2011 budget.
The mandate would have cost drivers $25 for the new blue and gold colored plates beginning April 1. It would cost even more for drivers to keep their current number. The plan was expected to generate $129 million in state revenue. The budget deficit is more than $3 billion.
The State Association of County Clerks is expected to deliver petitions to the governor today, with more than 100,000 signatures from New Yorkers who are opposed to the idea.
Meanwhile, the Assembly says they'll work with the governor to repeal the mandate.
Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos said Democrats should also restore STAR rebates and do away with tuition increases for SUNY students.
