SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It's the third straight year of dwindling revenues and increasing costs for the Syracuse City School District.

The superintendent and chief financial officer will present the proposed budget for the 2012-2013 school year to the public Tuesday night. It calls for about 150 position cuts. They anticipate about 50 of those will be through layoffs.

City school district officials started the year off with a $35 million budget gap, but were able to reduce that after some additional state aid and more money from the city. But the district officials are proposing to borrow against their state aid money for next year to fill the remaining gap for this year.

"We've had this option since 1991. Some other school districts have actually used it, but we have not. So we're asking the board to consider that next week when they vote on the budget, in lieu of cutting more positions or possibly closing several school buildings. Although this isn't an ideal option, there are no other really good options educationally for the students for the coming year," said Suzanne Slack, SCSD CFO.

Public forums will be held at the district's Central Offices on Harrison Street Tuesday and Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
