VESTAL, N.Y. -- Fraternities and sororities on the Binghamton University campus won't receive any new members this semester.

"I'm taken aback, because I really put a lot of effort into this and I really wanted to cross that threshold and become a brother into the society I was joining and I'm taken aback by it," said one fraternity pledge.

The university has suspended all pledging and recruitment for the spring semester in light of numerous complaints of hazing on the campus. The act is a violation of the University's Code as well as a crime punishable by state and federal law.

School officials say they are taking the allegations very seriously and are launching an investigation into each reported incident.

"The safety of the 15,000 students that I'm responsible for is the highest priority of my presidency. So I'm going to be very interested in what happened and how we can take corrective actions so that everyone is maximizing the safety of our students," said BU President Harvey Stenger.

Many members of Greek Life were reluctant to speak about the issue. But many did say they are upset they are being punished for something one or two fraternities or sororities may have done.

"Everyone is kind of upset by what's going on, because a lot of us haven't done anything wrong, but we're just stuck, but there are organizations that do stuff wrong but that's at every campus and you can't do anything if they are unchartered," said one sorority member.

"People have this misconception that across college campuses across the U.S., that it's constant hazing of these kids and for me that really wasn't the case," said a fraternity pledge.

Binghamton University says it plans to work together with the organizations throughout the investigation in the hopes that the students can continue a system of Greek Life and prevent anyone from getting hurt in the pledging process.
