SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse's Rosamond Gifford Zoo is excited to show off 27 newly-hatched yellow spotted Amazon River turtles. Zoo officials said the turtles used to be endangered, but with the help of breeding programs, the species is doing much better.

The baby turtles are only about two inches in length right now and can fit in the palm of your hand.

"Not like mammals or birds, there's no parental care with turtles so they're on their own from the second that they hatch and as I said, they crawl out of the soil then find their own way, learn how to eat on their own and learn how to survive on their own," said Ted Fox, zoo director.

Because the zoo has five of these turtles already, all of the babies will be going to other zoos and aquariums across the country. The zoo said they will be shipping the babies to their new homes within the next couple of weeks, so if you want to see the turtles, you'll have to stop by soon.
