BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Dennis Hannon resigned as the mayor of Johnson City. Hannon had originally planned to retire at the end of last year, but later decided to remain on a month-to-month basis until the spring.
He officially submitted a letter of resignation to village officials on Tuesday. His resignation is effective immediately and means that Deputy Mayor Richard Balles will take the position until the end of 2012. Then, a special election will be held in the fall to choose a candidate to serve out the remaining one year of Hannon's term.
A regular election will be held in 2013 to determine who will be mayor for a four-year term.
