TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- It's a happy milestone for animals who have come through the Tompkins County SPCA. The no-kill shelter just celebrated its one-thousandth adoption from the satellite location at the Ithaca Mall.

The site opened in May of 2009 to help with the overload of cats, some of whom wind up living at the shelter for years. This commercial setting allows more people to see the friendly felines looking for homes and has helped shorten the stay for many pets.

"It's kind of nice because people sometimes have a hard time coming into the shelter. And there are probably 300 animals there," said adoption counselor manager Jesica Lane. "And here, they're kind of perusing through the mall and they just get to stop in and pet them and play with them. And usually they fall in love with somebody and take them home."

Kitten season is coming to an end, but there are plenty of older cats that still need a loving home.
